Years ago the Cunard Steamship Line had the slogan, “Getting there is half the fun.” This would be true of cruising the glacial fjords between Ushuisa and Punta Arenas up on the Magellan Strait which was the most popular short cut across South America north of Cape Horn, before the Panama Canal was completed. It was popular because it was an inside protected passage with lower storm risks. It still had its fair share of wrecks, but not such a busy place these days.
While the city attractions are few, the passage up through the fjords from Ushuia is dramatic. The passage was cold and windy and cloudy. We wore our winter jackets, fleece and still nearly got blown along the deck, but what scenary!
